What do we mean by Earth Day? Everybody thinks that it is supporting the environment and in that general sense we are very right. We do not know when it started and how it started, but we think it is a good thing. We would be right on a very surface level but we need to know how it came about and why.
“Behind every Fairtrade cup of coffee lies a forest that is being protected.”
We can say this in all honesty as many Fairtrade co-operatives invest their Fairtrade premium payment on reforestation. In the past the premium paid for little maternity hospitals with one midwife, or a school for their local children, or housing or very basic things like public toilets. All these are important , of course, but our farmers are activists in protecting the environment in their farming methods and now in later years, replanting trees.
I am very proud that this year Llanelli and District has become a ‘Fairtrade Zone’.
